Duration   1h

Though they have almost faded into obscurity, witch bottles were, at one time, the leading folk magic devices to handle a vengeful witch or enemy. As the threat of witchcraft plagued England and witch-finders roamed East Anglia, people took it upon themselves to fight back to protect their homes and loved ones using these countermagical devices. When English colonists settled the New World, they brought these weapons with them. However, while nearly two hundred have been identified in England, less than a dozen have been identified in the United States.

Join the Virginia Beach History Museums' curator to learn how these bottles could stop a witch from harming you or your family, and their connection to Early America and the Hampton Roads area.

This event is free and open to the public.
