History Comes Alive! Book Club   View Event

  • Description:  What memories do you have of the house in which you grew up? Did the architecture or design of the house affect you? Miriam Jackson, Cultural Affairs, will give us a tour of the Thoroughgood House with information about the originating family dwelling there. We will tie this to our book discussion of The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, a novel about a house and how it impacts the families who reside in it. Historical fiction, this family saga spans several generations. After you register you may pick up a copy of the book at the Central Library or call 757-385-0150 to reserve.   • Description:  Care for a spot of tea? Come to the historic Lynnhaven House on Sunday, December 12, and celebrate the holiday season at “O Christmas Tea!” Dickens meets Downton Abbey in this classic, late 19th century holiday tea. Enjoy a specially curated selection of four traditional Victorian teas, a menu of tasty treats and a variety of holiday melodies! “O Christmas Tea” will take place at the Lynnhaven House on Sunday, December 12. Two seatings of 50 guests each are available (1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.). Tickets are $40 per person and must be purchased online in advance. Click here to purchase tickets for your seat at “O Christmas Tea.” Ticket registration is through the Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation ActiveNet system. If you do not already have an ActiveNet account, you will need to create your free account prior to purchasing tickets. Conversation with a Curator: 400 Years of Thorowgood (FREE/VIRTUAL)   View Event

  • Description:  The Virginia Beach History Museums are hosting “Conversation with a Curator: 400 Years of Thorowgood” from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, December 16. The event will be held virtually via WebEx. ​December 2021 marks 400 years since Adam Thorowgood arrived in the New World. Adam became a leader in the early Virginia Colony, and was the great-grandfather of Argall Thorowgood II, who built the historic Thoroughgood House. Our staff will discuss indentured servitude, Adam’s life, his role in the establishment of Princess Anne County, and more!
